By day, Eugene Porter is a respectable sort of fellow, currently on the brink of receiving his M.A. degree in education from UCSC while teaching social studies in high school. By night, however, Porter leads a life of another variety, as record company mogul and a singer/guitarist/bassist in the "gypsy garage" band Unsafe.

Fragile Hippy Records, Porter's company, is still in its gestational stages, but Unsafe is mature and ready for action. The punk trio performs a melting pot of styles--Porter cites The Clash, Bad Brains, and X as influences. For a while, a natty way to describe Unsafe was to toss the band off as "Dick Dale meets Sonic Youth"--that is, until members saw another group performing under the same description.

About Fragile Hippy Records: "The concept was to have a non-profit record company as a way of helping bands put out music," explains Porter.
